4-H University4-H University (4-H U) is an opportunity for 4-H members, volunteers and parents to explore the LSU campus, talk to students and faculty, and learn more about possible career choices. It has been designed to provide educational and fun experiences for youth ages 14 and up.
4-H U is an annual event that allows Louisiana 4-H’ers to compete for best in the state in more than 40 events ranging from plant identification, agricultural products, livestock judging, photography, and flight simulation to speechmaking and fashion design. In addition, students take part in the noncompetitive learning event called Clover College, which includes seven hours of instruction over three days.
During 4-H U, participants are introduced to aspects of life that college students experience on an everyday basis. Students also get to see how college students live during the week by residing in campus dormitories, eating at campus dining halls and even going through the rigors of scheduling classes.
Six East Carroll Parish 4-H members attended the 2009 4-H University. Three competed in contests and won a blue ribbon or placed in their respective contest. Three others participated in Clover College where they were able to experience a taste of college life. Creative Forces was one of the educational tracks chosen. This workshop develops critical thinkers and creative leaders in the transformation of society. Exploring the World of Sports was also chosen. This workshop was led by members of the LSU Athletic Department and focused on the expectations of college athletes.
