DeSoto 4-H Livestock Exhibitors take Honors

The Northwest District Livestock Show was held Saturday January 31, 2009 at the Louisiana State Fair Grounds. Fifteen youth from DeSoto Parish competed at the district show and will move on to the LSU Spring Livestock Show held in Gonzales, LA in mid February. Many top honors went to DeSoto parish youth.

Greg Simmons won the Senior Division Poultry Premier Exhibitor, a contest based on youth’s knowledge of their project. Hayley Parker won the Junior Division Dairy Premier Exhibitor as well as Champion and Reserve Champion Holsteins. In the swine division, Ethan Sarpy won Champion Duroc and Junior Swine Showmanship. Kyle Jordan received honors for Reserve Champion Duroc and Ben Hesser had the Reserve Champion Louisiana Bred market hog. Grand Champion Purebred Doe and Champion Louisiana Bred Doe went to Nikki Cunningham in the Goat Division and Chance Cunningham won Reserve Champion Louisiana Bred Market goat. Peter Ashley had the Grand Champion Commercial Doe and Champion Louisiana Bred Commercial Doe. Jimmy Ashley had a class winner in the heavyweight market goat division. Finally in the Beef Division Peyton Hartley won Champion and Reserve Champion Non-Brahman Influenced Commercial Heifer. Harlie Fossman won Grand Champion Brahman Influenced Commercial Heifer. Other DeSoto Parish 4-H members exhibiting livestock were Hope Fossman with commercial heifers, Russell Sarpy and Lauren Jordan with swine, and Kelsey Trenor with goats.
