The LSU Spring Livestock Show was held February 14 - 21, 2009 at the Lamar Dixon Expo Center in Gonzales, Louisiana and DeSoto Parish was very well represented by the seventeen youth who participated at this show.
Greg Simmons participated in the Exhibition Poultry show placing 2nd and 4th with his Buff Orpington exhibit.
In the commercial heifer show, Ethan Howell won 1st place in the 9-year-old showmanship class. Peyton Hartley had a class winner and 2nd place heifer. Hope Fossman placed 2nd and 4th with her heifers. Harlie Fossman had a class winner and a 3rd place heifer as well as Reserve Champion Commercial Heifer. DeSoto Parish exhibitors also won the parish group competition with their commercial heifers.
In the Goat Show, Kelsey Trenor won her class with her lightweight market goat that was also 1st place LA Bred. Chance Cunningham placed 6th and 8th with his market goats and 2nd and 6th place LA Bred. Jimmy Ashley placed 8th and 9th with his goats in the market classes and 3rd and 9th LA Bred. Nikki Cunningham placed 7th with her percentage doe and 4th pl
ace in the Pairs division with her percentage does. DeSoto Parish youth also placed 4th in parish groups with their percentage does exhibit. Peter Ashley also exhibited Boar and Commercial does at this show.
In the market hog division, Lauren Jordan placed 6th and 2nd LA Bred. Ben Hesser placed 4th with both his market hogs and 3rd place in the LA Bred division and was in the top ten exhibitors in his showmanship class. Russell and Ethan Sarpy both exhibited hogs placing in the top ten in their classes. Kyle Jordan also exhibited market hogs at this show.
Finally in the Dairy Show Hayley Parker had three class winners and LA Bred winners with her Holstein Heifers and 2nd place with her Holstein cow and a 3rd place in Showmanship. Haley’s heifers were also chosen as the Champion and Reserve Champion Jr. Yearling H
olsteins and the Champion and Reserve Champion LA Bred Jr. Yearling Holsteins. Hayley also won Best Fitted Holstein and Overall Champion and Reserve Champion LA Bred Holsteins. Hayley won the Jr. Division of the Dairy Judging Contest and Kassidy Parker placed 2nd in the Dairy judging contest.
