Caldwell school employees were trained in Worker Protection Standards, safety, calibration and types of pesticides to ensure their proper use and application in the Caldwell Parish school system.

Four Caldwell 4-H'ers competed in the LSU State Horse Show in West Monroe where they learned how to show their animals, horse safety and nutrition.

Twenty-five 4-H youth from 5 surrounding parishes participated in the Caldwell Parish Beef Show where they learned the proper way to show and present their animals in the show ring.

4-H

Austin Burns won first place in the State 4-H Forestry Records contest and will be going to Atlanta, Georgia in November for his reward trip.

Bryan Lamb won third place in the State 4-H Draw a Dairy Billboard contest. Bryan's poster advertising dairy products was among over 1,800 submitted in this statewide contest.

4-H booths were set up for Open House at Grayson, Union Central and Columbia elementary schools. 4-H'ers were present to distribute 4-H information and answer any questions about the 4-H program.

4-H'ers learned about the 4-H program and the projects, contests and community service opportunities offered for the 2007-08 club year during the September 4-H club meetings in which 377 students enrolled in the Caldwell Parish 4-H program.

The 4-H Junior Leader Club and the Fashion, Food and Fitness Club held enrollment meetings in September. Eighteen 4-H'ers enrolled in the Junior Leader Club and 34 4-H'ers enrolled in the Fashion, Food and Fitness club.

Newly elected 4-H club officers from Columbia, Central, Grayson and Old Bethel Christian Academy learned about their roles and responsibilities as 4-H club officers during officer training.

4-H volunteer leaders Patricia Russell, Portia Cassels and Danyell Guerrero attended this year's 4-H Area Leader Forum held in Rayville and were trained on issues pertinent to the 4-H program and to 4-H youth. Also attending were Linda Peterson and Dr. Cynthia Pilcher who assisted with the training during the event.

Family Consumer Sciences

Upon the request of Judge Don Burns, Danna Gillett, Extension Agent in Family Development, presented the parenting education programs "Children in the Middle," "Basic Parenting" and "Awareness of Abuse and Neglect" to Caldwell parents.

Family Nutrition Program

A hand washing station was set up during the Caldwell Parish Health Awareness Day to teach those who attended the importance of washing their hands.

Caldwell Parish Adult Education Center participants received the first of 4 lessons in the "Loving Your Family, Feeding Their Future" curriculum. This USDA nutrition education program teaches participants the importance of eating more fruits and vegetables and being physically active, how to stretch their food dollars and provides suggestions for quick and easy family meals.

Hand washing lessons were presented to students at Central, Columbia and Kelly elementary schools, Caldwell Pre-Kindergarten Center, Head Start and Old Bethel Christian Academy. Teachers request the lessons early in the school year so that students will learn that good hand washing habits can reduce the spread of germs, especially the common cold and flu.

Nutrition lessons on portion size, healthy snacks, eating a variety of fruits and vegetables and the grain group of My Pyramid were taught to students at Kelly and Central elementary schools and the Caldwell Pre-Kindergarten Center.
