Agriculture

An LSU core block corn variety test is being monitored before harvest. Test plots supply valuable yield, insect and disease resistance information for producers to incorporate into their farm plan for the upcoming year.

Six hay producers were advised on soil testing, forage analysis and grass varieties. These producers using LSU AgCenter recommendations are growing quality hay with a high percentage of protein and TDN which are necessary for this forage to compete in the marketplace.

Twenty five field visits were made concerning home gardens and home grounds. Insect, weed and disease information was given to clients to better maintain their lawns and gardens.

Thirty 4-H youth and 12 adults participated in the annual 4-H Fishing Clinic. 4-H'ers learned about water safety and participated in contests for the most fish and biggest fish. Junior leaders and adults were also present to show participants how to catch and release different types of fish.

One hundred fifty 4-H'ers and adults attended two North Louisiana Horse Camps at the Ike Hamilton Expo Center where they learned about basic horsemanship, horse safety, nutrition and horse show events.

4-H

During the April 4-H Club meetings, approximately 400 youth learned about the health benefits of incorporating physical activity into their daily routines.

Fifth grade students in Caldwell Parish learned about the timber industry during the annual Forestry Awareness Day held at the Columbia Tree Nursery. Nine 4-H Junior Leaders helped guide teachers and students through each educational session offered at the event.

The annual Caldwell Parish Farm Safety Day was held to teach 4th grade students about such safety issues as equipment safety, ATV safety, bicycle safety, weather safety, electrical safety and how to react in emergencies. 4-H Junior Leaders provided assistance to teachers, students and instructors during the event.

During the 6th Grade Health Awareness Day, students were given the opportunity to receive their immunizations as well as participate in hands-on activities during educational sessions on choking, self-esteem, substance abuse, character education, preparing for an interview, Glo-Germ and physical activity. The 4-H Character Ed team and 4-H volunteer leader Judith McKee taught the Character Education class and 4-H Junior Leaders guided the students to their sessions.

Sixty-five campers, five 4-H Junior Leaders and two 4-H volunteer leaders attended this year's 4-H Camp where they had the opportunity to participate in swimming, canoeing, dancing, archery, arts and crafts, sports and many hands-on educational activities related to cooking, outdoor adventures, dramatic arts and technology.

Over 30 4-H'ers and 4-H volunteer leaders attended 4-H Day at the Capitol where they toured the Capitol, visited with Representative Lelon Kenney and Senator Noble Ellington and observed a legislative committee meeting.

Six Caldwell 4-H'ers participated in this year's 4-H University held on the LSU campus in Baton Rouge. Congratulations to Dalton Johnson who won a blue ribbon in the ATV contest, Austin Burns and Kevin Foy who won blue ribbons in the Computer Simulation contest and Jade Pilcher who was selected as a memer of the State 4-H Fashion Board for the 2007-2008 year.

The 4-H Fashion, Food and Fitness club participated in the Caldwell Parish Relay for Life and raised $1,091 for the American Cancer Society. Members held a garage sale fundraiser prior to the Relay and offered face painting and other activities during the event.

Six Caldwell 4-H'ers competed in the State 4-H Ambassador Talk contest in Baton Rouge where they presented illustrated talks on chicken, seafood, eggs and turkey.
