Youth attending Ag Expo and Ag Alley learned about breeds and colors of horses, different types of horses and job opportunities in the horse industry during equine education lessons.
Youth attending Ag Adventures in Delhi learned about basic horsemanship and breeds and colors of horses during equine education lessons.
A corn core variety plot that will help producers make row crop decisions for the upcoming planting season was planted on Lelon Kenney's farm to enhance LSU AgCenter research.
Producers and home gardeners learned about chemical amounts and safety and calibrating chemicals during a private applicator recertification meeting.
Thirty-nine youth entered 41 animals in the 4-H Pet Show where they learned about nutrition, health and breeds of different animals.
Ten youth participated in the Ag Expo Livestock Show and the Northeast District Livestock Show. Through the livestock project, youth learn responsibility and develop the character necessary for showing their animals.
4-H
Approximately 260 fourth, fifth and sixth graders learned about being fair, trustworthy, responsible and good citizens during monthly 4-H club meetings.
Approximately 125 youth in grades 7 through 12 learned about displaying good character in the work force in order to be productive employers or employees.
Fourteen 4-H'ers participated in a parish workshop where they learned freeze modeling techniques they demonstrated for the public attending Ag Expo in West Monroe.
4-H agent Sandra Russell taught approximately 2,700 youth about cotton products and by-products during Ag Alley held at the Ike Hamilton Expo Center and Ag Adventures held at the Delhi Civic Center.
Members of the 4-H Fashion, Food and Fitness Club learned about self-esteem, taking care of their skin and sewing tools during monthly after-school meetings.
Members of the 4-H Junior Leader Club taught internet and food safety lessons to students in after-school programs at Columbia and Grayson elementary schools.
Forty posters promoting dairy and dairy products were submitted in this year's Dairy Billboard contest.
Thirty-one posters promoting beef and beef products were submitted in this year's Beef Poster contest.
Five Caldwell Parish 4-H'ers competed with 4-H'ers from ten other parishes during the Northeast Area Cookery Contest held in Winnsboro. Mallory Dannehl was a blue ribbon winner in the Pecan Cookery. Bailey Coates won a blue ribbon in the Rice Cookery and second place in the Egg Cookery. Blake Sanford won second place in the Corn Cookery and Maggie Frazier won second place in the Sweet Potato Cookery. Nealy McCoy won third place in the Catfish Cookery and Chicken Cookery.
Over 30 4-H'ers entered the 4-H Communications and Career Day where they had the opportunity to compete in Personal Development or interview, Demonstration and Ambassador Talk contests. Six 4-H'ers are eligible to compete in the State Ambassador Talk contest that will be held in Baton Rouge in April.
Family Nutrition Program
The Caldwell High School GED Prep and Caldwell Adult Education Center students participated in a Smart Choices nutritional education program titled "Healthy Heart, Lower Salt and Lower Fat Meals." Students participated in a hands-on activity that included preparation of a healthy low salt and low fat meal and learned when preparing meals at home they can reduce the amount of fat and salt consumed.
Twenty-one parents learned about "Feeding Children 2 to 5 Years of Age" from the Smart Choices curriculum during a parent meeting at Caldwell Parish Head Start. Parents practiced what they learned by putting a healthy meal together using faux food.
