| The 4-H shooting sports program in Calcasieu Parish is part of the State and National Outdoor Skills program started in 1999. It has grown from twelve 4-H'ers the first year to more than 150 members in 2007.
The program offers 4-H youth 9-19 years old the opportunity to learn about firearm saftey, marksmanship, hunting and wildlife conservation. The Calcasieu Parish program consists of six disciplines (areas) for youth: Shotgun, Rifle (BB gun, air rifle, .22 rifle), Archery, Black Powder, Pistol and Hunting.
Shooting sports offer 4-H'ers the opportunity to learn at their own pace and become more competitive and compete in parish, state and national contests.
The program is taught by certified volunteer instructors who have completed intense training. The instructors meet with the youth at least once a month.
To become a participant in the shooting sports program, youth must be enrolled in 4-H. To find out more about the program or how to join 4-H, please contact the parish 4-H office.
