4-H Club commodity cookery contest

ALEXANDRIA – Youth gathered at the Alexandria Mall with their favorite dishes packed on ice to compete in the annual Central Louisiana District 4-H Commodity Cookery Contest April 22.

Dishes were prepared at home following the food safety guidelines, chilled in the refrigerator and transported to the contest on ice to be ready for the judges to taste.

Tables were lined with dishes of various commodities such as beef, egg, pecan, poultry, seafood and sweet potato. There were 133 entries in the various commodities to be judged.

“Dishes were judged on appearance, taste, creativity, originality, dietary guidelines and the recipe format,” said Esther Coco Boe, LSU AgCenter Extension 4-H Agent in Avoyelles Parish.
