2008 Candy Making Clinic

The Candy Making workshop held at the Avoyelles 4-H office was a wonderful success.  8 stations were set up around the room where 4-H'ers rotated in and out with their Junior Leaders making different types of candy.

The parent volunteers worked hard to keep the stations safe and clean as the children mixed and measured.  All in all it was an educational, fun, and exhausting day for everyone.

The recipes included fudge, peanut butter fudge, buttermint candy, peanut brittle, marzipan, pralines, haystacks, and reindeer chow.  Please check out our website for the recipes.

2008
Pralines in the Microwave!?? Yes, and believe you me....they were delicious! This volunteer parent was wonderful to work with and taught the children a lot about candy making as well as safety in the kitchen.

2008
Marzipan, the oldest known candy from ancient times.....well, at least that's what Carlos Smith taught these 4-H'ers during their visit to this station.

2008
Fudge....microwave recipe with a base of chocolate chips. The pecans are nice and toasty too. This recipe is simple and this grandparent is a wonderful volunteer!

2008
Reindeer Chow! Can't wait to eat this crispy cereal coated with peanut butter, peanuts, and powdered sugar. Our Junior Leaders had their hands full working with the kids at all 8 stations.

2008
Haystacks-----butterscotch chips and chow mein noodles are the base for this sweet treat. The children mixed up the batches and spooned them into white candy cups for a pretty display.
2008
Reindeer Chow---mix all ingredients and place in a ziplock bad to dry. The ingredients include; chocolate chips, powered sugar, butter, peanuts, rice chex......it's a sweet treat for sure. Make some now and eat some later.

2008
Peanut Butter Fudge was a hit at this statation as the children learned how to measure powered sugar and also a little patience. This fudge did not "set" fast so it had a little time in fridge. After it's mixed and heated in the microwave it has to chill for at least 4 hours until it is cut into bars.....but it's worth every second because it is creamy and wonderful.

2008
Marzipan......an ancient candy. Made long ago and used to decorate cakes of the kings and queens in Greece and Rome.

2008
It was chilly outside but it surely got warm inside. You can see that the 8 stations were running smoothly but a little fresh air made things nicer.

2008
Haystacks------the 4-Hers at this station had the treat of putting their candy into small white paper cups to share with friends later. The haystacks are simple to make and can be stored in an airtight container for up to two weeks.
