Applications for Award of Excellence:
●Must be under 14 years of age on Jan. 1, 2011.
●Must have at least 2 years of 4-H club work including the award year.
●Must fill out application and score at least 100 on the application and scorecard.
●Return application to 4-H Office by Jan. 10, 2011.
Applications for Key Club Award:
●Must be 16 years of age on Jan. 1, 2011.
●Must have three years of 4-H club work including award year.
●Must score at least 140 points on the application and scorecard.
●Return application to 4-H Office by Jan. 10, 2011.

This contest is open to all 4-H members. The purpose of this poster contest is for 4-H’ers and their families to become more conscious about responsibility, respect, trustworthiness, fairness, citizenship and caring.
Rules are:
1. Poster MUST BE of uniform size - 22"x 28" poster board only.
2. Do not attach anything to poster that is more than 1 inch thick.
3. Be sure to place name, address, grade and school on the back of the poster in the upper right hand corner.
4. A blue, red or white ribbon will be given to every 4-H’er who participates.
Overall 1st, 2nd, 3rd and possible Honorable Mention place ribbons will be given in the following divisions:
Division CB - 3rd grade
Division I - 4th, 5th and 6th grade
Division II - 7th, 8th and 9th grade
Division III - 10th -12th grade
Character Education Posters are due at the January meetings or can be brought to the 4-H Office by Jan. 14, 2011.

2011 4-H BEEKEEPING ESSAY CONTEST ANNOUNCEMENT AND RULES
Sponsored by The Foundation for the Preservation of Honey Bees, Inc.
AWARDS: Cash Prizes to Three Top Winners:
•1st Place -- $750.00!
•2nd Place -- $500.00!
•3rd Place -- $250.00!
Each State Winner, including the national winners, receives an appropriate book about honey bees, beekeeping, or honey.
TOPIC: For the 2011 essay contest, the essay topic is: “U.S. Honey: A Taste for Every Preference”
The taste and color on honey varies according to the flowers where the nectar originates. Each different type of plant will yield honey with a different taste. The same plants, growing in different soils and climates, can yield different honey. The 4-H’ers are encouraged to investigate the local/regional honeys of the United States and see how they differ in taste and color. Is a honey dark with a rich flavor, or light in color and mild-tasting? Actual access to the honey for tasting is not required – just find out about some of the characteristics and write about them.
The scope of the research is an essential judging criterion, accounting for 40 percent of your score. The number of sources consulted, the authority of the sources, and the variety of the sources are all evaluated. Personal interviews with beekeepers and others familiar with the subject are valued sources of information and should be documented. Sources, which are not cited in the endnotes, should be listed in a “Resources” or “Bibliography” list.
Note that “honey bee” is properly spelled as two words, even though many otherwise authoritative references spell it as one word.
RULES:
1. Contest is open to active 4-H Club members only. 4-H'ers who have previously placed first, second, or third at the national level are not eligible; but other state winners are eligible to re-enter.
2. Requirements (failure to meet any one requirement disqualifies the essay) - - Write on the designated subject only. - All factual statements must be referenced with bibliographical-style endnotes.- A brief biographical sketch of the essayist, including date of birth, gender, complete mailing address, and telephone number, must accompany the essay.
- Length – the essay proper: 750 to 1000 words.
- The word count does not include the endnotes, the bibliography or references, nor the essayist's biographical sketch – which should be on a separate page.
- Preparation for National Judging: ELECTRONIC SUBMISSIONS ONLY. Prepare your essays double-spaced, 12-pt. Times or similar type style, following standard manuscript format. Submit as a Microsoft Word compatible document.
3. Essays will be judged on (a) scope of research - 40 percent; (b) accuracy - 30 percent; © creativity - 10 percent; (d) conciseness - 10 percent; and (e) logical development of the topic - 10 percent.
4. Individual essayists should not forward essays directly to the Foundation and should set its deadline so state judging can be completed at the state level in time for the winning state essay to be mailed to the Foundation office before March 1, 2011. No essay received after March 1 will be considered.
5. Each state may submit only one entry.
6. Final judging and selection of the National Winner will be made by the Foundation's Essay Committee, whose decision is final.
7. The National Winner will be announced by May 1, 2011.
8. All National entries become the property of the Foundation and may be published or used as it sees fit. No essay will be returned. National winning essays will be posted at: http://honeybeepreservation.org.

The public is invited to attend the Livestock Show on Jan. 15, 2011 at the parish livestock facility. There is no entry fee for the public and we will be serving lunch.
So come out and support the youth in Assumption Parish by attending this 4-H sponsored event. All animals have to be in the barn by 9:30 a.m. The show will start at approximately 10:30 a.m.

Challenge Camp is designed just for 7th and 8th grade 4-H members. Challenge Camp held at Camp Grant Walker.

COSTS:
Camp fee is $65 which includes a t-shirt, transportation and meals while at camp. This fee is due to the 4-H Office by Feb. 1, 2011.

The State 4-H Food and Fitness Board is working hard to plan an exciting and fun-filled camp. The camp is scheduled for March 26-27, 2011, at Camp Grant Walker. The camp will be a Disney theme, and campers will enjoy learning about food and fitness in settings of their favorite Disney shows and movies. Food and Fitness camp is open to 4-H’ers age 9-12.
