Ascension campers holiday the healthy way

Ascension Parish 4-H'ers Ashley, Kassie, Gabby and Abigail participated in the 2009 Food and Fitness Camp held February 14-15 at Camp Grant Walker. Each parish can send a team of up to 6 campers to participate. Campers are selected from the winners of the various cookery contests in Ascension.

During this fun, exciting weekend camp the girls learned lots about nutrition, fitness and fun. The theme this year was "Holidays the Healthy Way" and included many holiday themed activities. During the fitness rotation campers learned about stress management in the "chains that bind" activity. They then had fun playing hot potato and 4-H says while learning about anaerobic exercise. Stepping up the pace to full fitness the girls rode bikes, power walked and did exercises. During the afternoon, campers had a tasty treat as they learned and sampled healthy recipe ideas for holidays through out the year. Recipes included: New Year's Seven Layer Bean Dip; Cinco De Mayo Beef Shepherd's Pie; Back To School Apple Oat Squares; Red, White & Blueberry Smoothies; and Valentine's Crepes. Each of our girls learned the importance of vitamins, portions and nutrients the ingredients in these recipes offer.

The evening kicked off the Mardi Gras program where campers learned about Mardi Gras celebrations in different parishes, decorated a capuchon, made Mardi Gras masks, and ate king cake in the cake walk. As always, we finished off the evening with a dance where 4-H'ers demonstrated their knowledge of line dancing.

During the final day of camp Kassie, Ashley, Abigail and Gabby won lots of prizes playing carnival games including: chillin n' grillin with Father's Day, Easter eggs in a basket, patriotic balloon game and Labor Day M.R.E. They rapped up the camp session learning about table etiquette, the secrets to good measuring and participating in a scavenger hunt.

Ascension parish earned an honorable mention for their capuchon hat and the red team, which included Ascension and several other parishes, won the group award for most wild.

This was an exciting camp put on the Food and Fitness State Board and their advisors. The teen leaders worked hard and our girls had lots of fun. A big Thank You goes out to the board members, their agents, and the sponsors who helped make this event possible.
