Safety first is what the LSU AgCenter wants to promote this summer as many of the youth are taking advantage of their vacation by riding bikes, rip sticks, Heelies etc. Ascension parish 4-H agent applied and received a grant through the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission. Over 81 YMCA campers’ ages 5-8 received helmets after undergoing a bike safety “puppet show”. Each child was able to select a helmet of their choice. The helmets were assembled and adjusted correctly in order to fit each child. The children of the YMCA summer camp were very enthusiastic and excited to receive the helmets. The parents of the campers completed both permission slips and personal thank you messages for the grant. This was a huge success with the help of the LSU AgCenter staff, YMCA staff and Ms. Cara Bozeman the region 2 Child Safety coordinator of Baton Rouge.
