Renewable Natural Resources

Welcome to the School of Renewable Natural Resources

LSU and the LSU Agricultural Center have a long tradition in natural resource education, research, and extension, beginning with the first forestry class in 1911 and continuing to the present School of Renewable Natural Resources. The importance of this program is based on the $4 billion annual economic impact to the State from natural resource commodities (e.g., timber harvesting, wood products, recreational hunting, hunting leases, recreational and commercial fishing, etc.). Our research and extension programs are housed in the LSU AgCenter, while the School’s teaching curriculum is in the LSU College of Agriculture. Active areas of research in School include natural fisheries, forestry, forest products, and wildlife. We have a very strong research emphasis in

1) Freshwater and Estuarine Aquatic Ecology and Management (e.g., fish-habitat interactions; waterfowl ecology; watershed management; hydrology; bottomland hardwoods; coastal marsh restoration; coastal forests; etc.)

2) Ecology and Management of Upland Forests and Wildlife (avian ecology, wildlife conservation, game species management, forest ecology, economics and biometrics; quantitative silviculture; stand dynamics; invasive plants; medicinal plants; etc.), and

3) Forest Products (e.g., wood products utilization and marketing; environmental safety; wood moisture relationships; wood composites; treated wood recycling; fiber utilization; etc.).

I invite you to visit our website and contact either myself or any of our faculty members for more information about our research programs. Please visit: www.rnr.lsu.edu.

Sincerely,

Dr. Allen Rutherford
