The School of Animal Sciences Director's Message

Dr. Gary Hay

Welcome to the Louisiana State University School of Animal Sciences. Our mission is to provide research and extension programs in the animal sciences through the LSU Agricultural Center and academic degree programs through the LSU College of Agriculture.

With over $2.5 billion dollars in income generated in Louisiana in 2010, animal agriculture continues to be a major economic enterprise throughout the state. Over 100,000 Louisiana families are involved with food and recreational animal production as well as the manufacture of animal products such as meat, milk and eggs.

The LSU School of Animal Sciences is a fully integrated animal science program. We provide a wide array of research, extension and academic programs in food, recreational and companion animal production and animal products. We offer Bachelor of Science (BS) degrees in a variety of degree options, such as animal science, dairy science, dairy foods technology and poultry science. We also offer training in equine science, meat science, companion animals and pre-veterinary medicine. Our programs prepare students for exciting and challenging careers in a wide range of animal and food industries. We also offer a variety of scholarship and career-oriented internship opportunities for qualified students.

We offer graduate degrees at both the Master of Science (MS) and Doctoral (PhD) levels. Our research programs cover a variety of scientific disciplines such as animal nutrition, animal genomics, reproductive physiology, embryology, molecular biotechnology, metabolic physiology, functional foods, meat science and food quality assurance. Our research mission is led by our research faculty in conjunction with the LSU AgCenter.

We provide a wide variety of education and outreach opportunities through our extension mission. We provide training and educational activities for young people throughout the state through our 4-H livestock and horse programs. 4-H members can participate in projects to raise livestock, horse shows and other horsemanship events, judging contests, livestock shows, educational trips, livestock clubs and a variety of additional events.

Livestock producers, horse owners, animal industry support personnel, government agencies, corporate interests and the general public benefit from our educational programs on animal production practices as well as contemporary animal industry issues such as food safety, the environment, animal welfare, etc. These are conducted throughout the state by our extension faculty and county agents in conjunction with the LSU AgCenter.

Our offices are located on the LSU campus in Baton Rouge, but our classrooms truly extend throughout the state and the world. Thank you for visiting us and please contact me if you have any further questions or comments.
