Mel Bartholomew is the originator and author of Square Foot Gardening. His popular Square Foot Gardening TV series ran on PBS, Discovery Channel and Learning Channel for eight years. He created the non-profit Square Foot Gardening Foundation to bring better gardening to all people of all ages around the world, including an innovative "Garden in Every School Program."
A civil engineer and graduate of Georgia Tech University, Mel retired at 42 and started to garden as a hobby. His hobby quickly became a second, very successful career as Mel set out to solve the frustrations of most gardeners by replacing the traditional wasteful single-row gardening method. He invented the Square Foot Gardening system that enabled gardeners to grow more in less space with less work. Mel continues to write, teach, motivate and inspire gardeners worldwide.
