Sucker Control/Management on Crape Myrtles

suckers
Tired of suckers on crape myrtles?

Many home gardeners and landscape professionals are asking about sucker control on this popular tree. Suckers are more prone on juvenile, young trees. In addition, mechanical damage (weed trimmers) to the lower stem and upper portion of the root system can cause sucker development. Trees with surface roots have more suckers also.

When removing suckers, do not leave a stub. You can spray napthaleneacetic acid (NAA -- a synthetic auxin) to control suckers. Products available with this active ingredient are Sucker Stopper from Monterey Lawn and Garden Products and Fertilome Prune Smart Sprout Inhibitor. Sucker Stopper is available in a ready-to-spray formulation and in a concentrate for professional use. In addition to crape myrtles, these products work on river birch, holly, ligustrum and other ornamental plants were suckering is an issue. Read and follow label directions for best results.
