Why shop at a farmers market?

Access
to fresh, locally grown foods, for starters. That may be one of the best reasons, but there are many more.

Nutrition.gov just launched a video to promote the benefits of shopping at farmers markets, featuring a registered dietitian as she talks with farmers and customers at the market. The video also has a webpage with the Top 10 Reasons to Shop at Farmers Markets and links to resources to help you find local markets and get the most out of your market experience.

Wouldn't you rather stroll outdoor stalls of fresh produce on a sunny day? A farmers market is a community gathering place. It is a place to meet up with your friends, bring your children or just get a sample of small-town life in the middle of a big city. Some markets offer "A Taste of the Season" to sample the freshest products your area has to offer!

This video will soon be available on DVD, so if you are looking for a tool to help encourage your students, clients and the public to shop locally for fresh, nutritious food, you can request a copy by emailing info@nutrition.gov

The video was featured on the USDA Blog and cross posted to the Let’s Move Blog. It is also available on the USDA and NAL You Tube channels.

Learn Cooking Tips, recipes and meal ideas: Learn how to cook the ingredients you buy with free advice about how to prepare the the foods the farmers, ranchers, and vendors at the farmers market are selling.

Know where your food comes from: Reconnect with farmers themselves selling their produce at the farm stands. Meet the producers of your food and learn how food is grown, where it is grown, when it is grown and why. Farmers work so hard to bring you the most delicious and nutritious food in your area.
