EFNEP

The LSU AgCenter's Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) is part of a national nutrition education outreach program. The mission of EFNEP is to empower limited-income families with young children to make informed decisions about food purchasing, food safety and meal management. Upon completion of the program, participants should be able to solve problems related to their families' food dollars and meal management, which, in turn, will help them become more efficient in meeting their families' needs.

EFNEP's targeted audience is limited-income families who have young children living in the household and who are eligible for public assistance. EFNEP serves individuals and families who are expecting a child (pregnant) or who provide noncustodial care for children on a regular basis (grandparents or noncustodial parents) as long as these individuals meet the income guidelines. Louisiana's EFNEP program is a cooperative effort with other community service providers who can provide access to eligible clientele and a meeting place in exchange for this valuable program. The program is designed to work well in small- to medium-size groups. Lessons can be easily adapted to classes of varying lengths and to meet the priority needs of each group. Services received include the 12-lesson EFNEP series that helps participants explore ways to obtain and provide food for their families. This will include making food choices that meet family needs and preferences, planning meals and snacks, shopping for food and keeping the food safe to eat.

The EFNEP curriculum includes teaching resources oriented to "learning by doing." The concepts of goal setting, decision making and problem solving are integrated into the lessons through group activities, educational exercises, food preparation experiences and demonstrations.
