FEMA has issued a policy change that applies to homes affected by flood map changes that took effect on or after October 1, 2008. People newly mapped into a flood hazard area in these parishes may be able to take advantage of a two-year extension of eligibilty for Preferred Risk Policy rates. The index map above is color-coded to show which parishes have FIRMS that became effective on or after October 1, 2008, which have new FIRMs pending, and which have earlier effective dates and no changes pending. Flood maps on this site are displayed over Bing maps. This system is unique in that it integrates flood risk information with ground elevation data (provided by a service of the US Geological Survey) and basic wind speed (derived from the 2003 International Residential Code and produced as a service by the LSU AgCenter). Effective January 1, 2013, Louisiana is replacing the 2003 IRC Basic Wind Speed map with the 2012 IRC Wind Speed map as the wind-speed design criteria for one-to-four family dwellings.
Offical Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs) can be found for all parishes at the FEMA Map Service Center (MSC) web site. FEMA's MSC Web site is the official source of FIRMettes that can be used for flood insurance and floodplain management purposes.
