Community Rebuilding and Flood Protection Expo

Presentations and demonstrations will be offered at hourly intervals throughout the afternoon, beginning at 1:15. Topics include:

  • Choosing Wall and Attic Insulation
  • Controlling Humidity and Related Problems in Air-Conditioned Homes
  • Roofing to Resist Wind and Rain Damage
  • Choosing Efficient and Comfortable Home Environment Systems
  • To Tank or Not To Tank (discussion of water heaters)
  • Practical & Attainable Green Enhancements
  • Building with Recycled Materials
  • Controlling Termites in Louisiana Homes
  • Avoiding Problems with Lead
  • Protecting Homes from Shallow Flooding
  • Storm Surge Basics and Visualizing Risks
  • Role of the Neighborhood Association in Recovery
  • The NFIP and Floodproofing Historic Buildings
  • Elevating Homes Sustainably -- Decision Factors
  • LSU AgCenter rebuilding resources, Registry and LaHouse

A raised-floor home will be showcased with representatives of "Raised Floor Living" on hand throughout the afternoon. Arrangements have been made with several homebuilders and elevation contractors to be at their sites and available to discuss rebuilding issues with participants. Also, exhibitors coming in for the National Floodproofing Conference have been invited to show their products in the community before setting up downtown for the conference.

FEMA is offering a formal workshop:

Foundation Design and Construction for the Gulf Coast
3:00-6:00 p.m.
This course is for engineers and building officials doing residential work and introduces the popular FEMA-550 manual: Recommended Residential Construction for the Gulf Coast: Building on Strong and Safe Foundations.

The workshop is free, but pre-registration is required. Class size is limited to 30. More info

The expo is being produced by the LSU AgCenter in cooperation with UNO-CHART, Tulane City Center, La DOTD Office of Floodplain Regulations and Gulf Coast Bank and Trust, with sponsorships from Raised Floor Living, Innovative Emergency Management and Shaw Environmental and Infrastructure, Inc. and assistance from First NBC Bank, Investor's State Bank, Fire Station No. 18 and Joint Task Force Gator. The LSU AgCenter/UNO-CHART/Tulane City Center rebuilding resources and programs are supported by funding from the Road Home Program.
