Site, Drainage & Landscape |
|
Choosing a site for building a home can be one of the most important decisions a person has to make during his or her lifetime. Making sure a site meets your present and future needs requires an investment in planning and research. The site must be adequate for building the original home, as well as accommodating any renovations you may make to the house in the future. The site also must be adequate enough to accommodate any buildings you may add to the site.
Drainage is often a prime concern when choosing a site. Does the site have adequate drainage, or will it require considerable work before it drains properly? Is it low-lying to the extent of being at risk of flooding? Is it in an identified flood hazard area, where special building restrictions apply?
Landscaping is another concern for many people. What type of landscaping do you want or does the property require? Are there any regulations regarding the type and/or species of plants that can be planted on the property? Is there any landscaping that can help reduce the threat of damage by hurricanes? Can the house be oriented on the property to minimize solar heat gain in summer and take advantage of passive solar heating in the winter?
This channel contains information that can help answer questions you have about the site, drainage and landscape.
