Extension demonstrations are conducted annually in numerous parishes throughout the state. The objective of these demonstrations is to evaluate new varieties and continue evaluating proven or recommended varieties under “real world” situations. These large-scale demonstrations are conducted primarily by the parish county agent with assistance from the state specialist and seed dealers.
The on-farm demonstrations allow producers to get a more “local” evaluation of selected varieties closer to a particular farming operation. Recently, the “core block” concept has been initiated in these crop demonstrations, whereby only recommended varieties are tested in the core blocks over several locations in the state. The response to the core blocks has been exceptional. Since statistics are used on the core blocks, more information on varieties and how they respond under different cultural practices is being reported more effectively. If you are interested in hosting a crop demonstration, please contact your county agent.
