Southeast Station - April 10

planting at Southeast Station
Figure 1. Planting was done on April 10 at the Southeast Research Station using planters spaced 36 inches apart to achieve a planted population of 27,360 plants per acre. Atrazine was sprayed right after planting as a pre-emergence herbicide at 1 lb per acre.

The Southeast Research Station, located in the state's dairy area, is working on sweet sorghum studies aimed at evaluating ethanol production potential. Currently, two sweet sorghum field trials are going on a one-acre experimental field. A study is being conducted jointly with the Macon Ridge Research Station to determine the effects of plant population density and five nitrogen fertilizer rates on sweet sorghum yield. Also, four sweet sorghum varieties (Dale, M81-E, Theis and Topper) are being tested for yield, performance and maturity.
