It rained approximately 1.4 inches this past Saturday. This rain helped the sorghum to move quite a bit since last week’s blog. Not only did the sorghum grow at a much faster rate than the previous four weeks, but it also lost that purple color on the leaves that we discussed last week. The combination of fertilizer and rainfall must have done the trick. In picture 1 taken on Monday, you can see my research associates Ron P. Regan and Bradley Reiners applying glyphosate (RoundUp) at a rate of 1.5 quarts per acre using a covered spray boom. This was done to make each of our research plots exactly 30 feet long. Once the glyphosate does its job, our plots will have a total area of 300 square feet. Since we will know the exact area of each plot, we will be able to use that area after harvest to extrapolate a yield on a per acre or hectare basis.

In picture 2 taken on Friday, you can see that the glyphosate has done its job already. The each plot can now be easily identified. I will try to place some signs out in front of the first replication of the trial. That way, you will be able to see some of the visual differences between the varieties as the season progresses. Until next week…
