Bioenergy exhibit big hit in Washington

Audubon sugar faculty receiving an award
LSU AgCenter’s participation at the Biomass and Energy Awareness Days (BEAD II) EXPO in Washington, D.C., June 19-22, was a success, reports Giovanna DeQueiroz, assistant professor at the Audubon Sugar Institute. The purpose of this event was to raise awareness of sustainable production of agriculture-based and natural resource-based renewable energy and the efficient use and conservation of energy for the benefit of rural communities and the nation. DeQueiroz said the AgCenter’s current efforts in bioenergy were well-received by congressional representatives, ambassadors, the scientific community and others who attended. More than 25 universities participated in the event. The majority of the research information provided had been obtained at a laboratory scale and focused on bioethanol and biodiesel from lignocellulosics and algae. The University of Georgia (gasification), Auburn University (gasification) and the LSU AgCenter were among the few universities who are working at a pilot scale. A certificate of appreciation was awarded to the LSU AgCenter by Under Secretary for Rural Development Thomas Dorr, Under Secretary for Research, Education and Economics Gale Buchanan and former Assistant Secretary of Agricultural for Science and Education Duane Acker.
