Agricultural Leadership Development Program

Building Louisiana’s Future

Created in 1988 to enhance leadership in rural Louisiana, the LSU AgCenter’s Agricultural Leadership Development Program is a highly successful two-year course of study that prepares young men and women, dedicated to agriculture, for the leadership challenges of the future.

The Agricultural Leadership Development Program includes seminars with experts, on-site tours, personal skills improvement, meetings with business and government leaders in Louisiana and Washington, D.C., and international study. The founders of this program believed investing in people is one of the keys to maintaining Louisiana’s vibrant agriculture. To this end, the Agricultural Leadership Development Program was established with three guiding principles. They are to:

  • Develop leaders who understand and prepare for global influences and opportunities.
  • Develop leadership skills and awareness in participants so they become confident, effective communicators.
  • Develop participant understanding and involvement in the social, economic and political systems in which people strive to improve their enterprises and communities.

The program focuses primarily on agriculture, but its scope is broad enough to include ornamentals and food and fiber industries and supporting service businesses. A typical class may include members from crop agriculture, animal agriculture, forestry, ornamentals, seafood and associated service professions such as banking, law and media.
