James L. Griffin, Terrence Tiersch and the Louisiana Agricultural Experiment Station’s Cotton Variety and Strain Evaluation Team won the top research awards presented at the LSU Agricultural Center’s Annual Conference in December 1999.
Griffin, a professor in the Plant Pathology and Crop Physiology Department and weed scientist, received the Doyle Chambers Research Award for meritorious contributions to agriculture.
Tiersch, a professor at the Aquaculture Research Station, received the Mississippi Chemical Corporation/Triad Nitrogen Award, which is given to the scientist who has made during the past five years the most significant contributions to the LAES research program. Both of these awards include a $2,000 cash prize.
This year’s Tipton Team Award was presented to the cotton team, which includes scientists at four locations. Team coordinator is David Caldwell at the Red River Research Station near Bossier City. The other members are Patrick Colyer, also at Red River; Steve Moore at the Dean Lee Research Station near Alexandria; Don Boquet and Merritt Holman, both at the Northeast Research Station near St. Joseph; and Ivan Dickson in the Agronomy Department. Because of their work, cotton producers in Louisiana can make informed choices about seed varieties so they can both save money in production costs and make money in yields.
