Areas of Specialization/Research

Resource and Environmental Economics.  Research in this area covers a wide array of topics, but primarily concentrates on the economic evaluation of 1) the development, adoption, and management of technology in resource-based production systems, particularly with respect to technology developed to address environmental externalities in coastal and marine systems, and 2) the use of market and non-market mechanisms for environmental and resource valuation and dispute resolution.  Both areas of research have implications for the short- and long-term use of renewable and nonrenewable resources, especially with respect to the allocative efficiency and distributional equity of natural and human capital.

Bioeconomics of Resource Use.  Current focus is on 1) the economic and biological interactions affecting the operation of natural and human-managed production systems, especially the impacts of technology and risk on decision making and system sustainability, and 2) the interaction of natural and human capital in the economic, environmental, and sociological sustainability of resource management. This research currently emphasizes the application of economic and optimization theory, along with the development of quantitative measures of sustainability.
