Statewide Service-Learning Initiative
At the six 4-H educational sessions held March 15, staff talked about a wide variety of issues related to meeting the needs of Louisiana youth through 4-H. Louisiana 4-H has selected Service-Learning as our statewide focus. Service-learning can be delivered in a variety of ways supporting a wide array of program areas. Service-learning is a win-win for parish 4-H programs and can be integrated into goals and objectives already planned for next year.
Service-learning has many benefits. Students move beyond the classroom or 4-H program experience to see the relevance and importance of learning in their real life experience. It enhances students' self-esteem and sense of civic responsibility by allowing them to make a difference through active and meaningful contributions to their communities. Service-learning broadens perspectives and enhances critical thinking skills. Studies show that service-learning improves interpersonal and human relations skills, which are increasingly viewed as the most important skills in achieving success in professional and personal spheres.
The Statewide Service-Learning Initiative will be unveiled to our 4-H members and leaders at 4-H University June 22. To provide parishes with the knowledge and resources for success, two dynamic trainings will be held across the state. The training dates are July 21- 22 and July 26-27 starting at 10 a.m. on the first day and ending by noon on the second. Each parish will be required to recruit a group of individuals made up of a lead 4-H agent, 4-H volunteer or community collaborator and youth. The Service-Learning Team is finalizing the details of this dynamic opportunity to reach the youth of Louisiana in a meaningful way. Details will be sent in the future.
