Orientation for New Employees
A Monthly Orientation for New Employees is held the second Tuesday of each month. A bi-annual orientation is held each March and August. New employees must attend the first monthly orientation session and the first bi-annual orientation session which occur after their employment begins. The monthly orientation includes an overview of the AgCenter, an introduction to the AgCenter's computer resources, and an opportunity to meet with a representative of the Human Resource Management Office for assistance with employment forms and benefits program enrollment.
Orientation for new employees is critical in terms of providing them with the proper foundation to function as productive members of the AgCenter team. The current Monthly Orientation Program is designed to address the most immediate needs of new employees. While this program is important and is not being changed or eliminated, it does not provide enough time to discuss complex issues such as management of grant funds, promotion and tenure, the Civil Service system and numerous other comparable topics. Further, most of these topics are better understood when an employee has been with the AgCenter at least a few months. We have put together an orientation program that would provide the necessary time to cover topics such as these. Details of the program and the registration form will be posted soon. AgCenter Supervisory Training Program The HRM Office presents training for supervisors throughout the year. This training program is designed to assist supervisors in understanding key laws, rules and policies to effectively manage their employees. It covers areas such as employment laws, AgCenter policies, Civil Service rules, attendance problems, motivating employees, management principles, communication skills,and leadership styles. The courses currently offered are:
Promotion and Tenure Training The HRM Office presents annual Promotion and Tenure Training. This training is designed for faculty who are considering submitting promotion and/or tenure (P&T) requests or who otherwise want more information about the process. The training is been divided into two parts. The first part will explain the overall process to faculty and their unit heads. The second part will focus on the unit head’s specific responsibilities (department head, regional director, resident director, resident coordinator, parish chair, etc.). MAPs – Monthly Administrative Programs The HRM Office along with Administrators and units such as Communications, Information Technology, Accounting Services, Sponsored Programs, Faculty Council and Staff Council provide monthly distance education meetings for training on current issues. The sessions are held monthly and the subject matter will consist of topics of interest to all employees. Click here to view past programs . Miscellaneous Special Topics Training Program The HRM Office offers training throughout the year on select topics. Such topics include:
CPTP (Comprehensive Public Training Program) The State of Louisiana offers training to all state employees through the Comprehensive Public Training Program (CPTP) . CPTP provides management development, supervisory and general job skills training for state employees. All employees (faculty, other academic and classified) are eligible. CPTP training is free. (Note, however, that any associated travel costs for a participating employee must be covered by unit's funds or individual travel allocation.) Classroom Based Training Most Classes are 1 or 2 days in length. Classes are taught in several areas around the state including, Alexandria, Baton Rouge, Hammond, Houma, Lafayette, Lake Charles, Monroe, New Orleans, and Shreveport. To register for classes, complete the appropriate course registration form, obtain supervisory approval (parish chair, resident coordinator, department head, regional director or equivalent) and forward the form to the AgCenter HRM Office. Following the approval process, the employee will receive written confirmation from the CPTP office that will include time, date, exact location and contact information for questions, rescheduling, or canceling.
Note that employees who register for classes should be committed to attending as space in courses is often quite limited. Computer Based Training Computer-based training courses are currently being provided through a contract with MindLeaders. In addition to computer-software courses, there are a number of professional development courses available as well. Certain Training Programs inculde: Access, Dreamweaver, Excel, Front Page, Office, Outlook, PowerPoint, Quick Books, Word, Business Math, Coaching Skills, Communication, Customer Service, Conflict Resolution, Presentation Skills, Interview Skills, Time Management and Workplace Environment Series.
