SET Board Application

4-H members will serve on the SET Board promoting the Louisiana Science, Engineering and Technology Program and serving as its advisory group. The state 4-H SET Mission Mandate coordinator, youth wetlands director, 4-H Web coordinator and assigned 4-H agents will serve as advisors to the SET Board.

Eligibility:

  • The applicant must be currently enrolled in 4-H and classified in the 9th-12th grade the year they serve.
  • Must be enrolled in a SET-related project or a member in good standing of a SET project club. (Available Projects)
  • Have leadership experience at a local level through either their school, 4-H or community.

Objectives:

Members will:

  1. Plan and promote SET-related programs that provide for life and career skill development related to science, engineering and technology throughout the state. In addition, opportunities for the development of decision making, communication, planning and organization, problem solving, leadership and service will be promoted.
  2. Develop and promote educational programs for LOST camp. Coordinate and deliver camp activities and programs.
  3. Explore careers in science-, engineering- and technology-related fields.
  4. Correspondence will be done mostly through e-mail. Members must have an e-mail account and check e-mail WEEKLY.

Members will be required to:

  • Submit acceptance of position, pay $35 membership dues.
  • Attend both summer (July 11-13, 2012, Woodsworth) and winter (January 11-12, 2013, Camp Grant Walker) State 4-H Youth Board meetings.
    • Applicants who cannot attend summer board meeting will not be considered.
  • Attend, help plan, and conduct a Service-Learning project (April 12-14, 2013).
  • Attend, help plan, and conduct the 4-H LOST Camp, 4-H Camp Grant Walker. (First week in August)
  • Serve as state liaison in the region and parish they represent.
  • Plan, conduct and report on a parish SET related project no later than March 2013.
  • Acquire certification as camp counselor prior to working with youth.
  • Communicate regularly through email, Facebook and/or online website.
  • Evaluate their experience as a State 4-H SET Board member.
  • Provide their own transportation to board events.
  • Be an active member of the their parish 4-H club.

Members may be asked to:

  • Meet in the spring, on a weekend or holiday, for brainstorming to work on a project, or creative or technical training.
  • Organize and implement regional activities and/or provide leadership for area training, challenge camp, and other programs.
  • Plan and participate in JLC (Junior Leadership Conference) activities.

Annual Agenda:

Most of the SET Board activities will be conducted during two meetings, as well as by e-mail and/or telephone. 4-H’ers will need to be responsible, dependable, and dedicated to their role as SET Board members.

Applicants need to check their calendar before applying to be sure she/he can attend all of the scheduled functions. Dates may be changed due to circumstances beyond control. Other activities may be planned during the year, but those listed below are definite. If a required event is not attended, member will be put on probation and must attend the next required function or will be replaced by an alternate.

  • July 11-13, 2012 SET Summer Board Meeting (required) – Election of Officers
  • July 30 – August 3, 2012 LOST Camp
  • October (Date TBA) SET Fall Board Conference Call/Distance Ed Meeting
  • January 11-13, 2013 SET Winter Board Meeting (required)
  • April 12-14, 2013 Service-Learning Project (Location TBA) (required)

Application should be well-written. Be sure to fill out the state application and read the SET Board supplemental sheet in its entirety and submit it to your local 4-H agent prior to the due date. Your agent may submit your application by e-mail, mail or fax.
