The 4-H’ers who participated in the 2011 4-H U Robotics Clover College encountered challenges similar to those faced by scientists and engineers. With the help of the LSU Robotics Department, 4-H’ers worked in teams to build SumoBots. Then, they put them to the test in a SumoBot competition.
As a result of participating in this Clover College, students indicated the following on the evaluation:
86% Gained an understanding of robotics.
79% Have a greater understanding of the robotic design process.
When students were asked how they plan to use the knowledge gained from the track, they said the following:
“I plan to help with our new robotics department in my parish 4-H.”
“Robotics is really awesome!!!”
“I might use it in my senior project”
“Possibly take more of engineer role in 4-H.”
In addition to gaining valuable knowledge about robots, students’ eyes were opened to future career choices in the areas of science and technology.
