What parents should know

What parents should know

One of the important things children learn from camp is to be self-sufficient. That is, they learn they can survive for four whole days on their own. The camp week lasts four days and starts on Monday afternoon, when the boys and girls arrive, and ends on Friday morning after breakfast. The first meal served at camp is supper on Monday night. To help children learn self-sufficiency, parents are asked not to call or visit campers unless there is an emergency.

Parents also are asked not to send food or snacks. Three meals and snacks are served each day. Snacks include bottled water, soft drinks, fruit and crackers. Campers will not need money for food at 4-H Camp; however, they will be able to buy a few souvenirs and treats. 4-H agents, volunteer leaders and teen counselors from each parish attend and stay in the cabins with the campers.

We are excited to tell you about our partnership with Bunk1.com! Bunk1’s secure, easy-to-use, summer Web site services let you stay in touch with your camper all summer! See the attached letter for more information.

To help make it possible for every 4-H boy and girl to go to camp at least one time, the 4-H Camp Grant Walker Educational Center operates on a non-profit basis. Costs are kept as low as possible. Since transportation costs vary from parish to parish, please contact your parish 4-H agent about the total camp fee for your parish.

Individual camp fees must be paid by parish extension agents, so these fees are collected in the parish several months before your camping date. Camp pictures and T-shirts also are available through your local extension agent.

The mailing address at camp is:
Grant Walker 4-H Educational Center
3000 Hwy. 8
Pollock, LA 71467

The emergency phone numbers are:
Day 318.765.7209
Night 318.792.0024
