National Volunteer Week, slated for April 19-25, 2009, is a perfect opportunity to recognize the contributions of volunteers, according to LSU AgCenter 4-H youth volunteer specialist Dr. Todd Tarifa.
Sponsored by the Points of Light Foundation, National Volunteer Week is about thanking one of America's most valuable assets – volunteers – and calling the public's attention to all that they do to improve our communities. National Volunteer Week 2009, "Celebrating People in Action," presents an opportunity for individuals, families, nonprofit organizations and government entities alike to celebrate the ordinary people who accomplish extraordinary things through service.
"In Louisiana alone, volunteers share over 825,000 hours of their time, which equates to over $16,100,000. Their talents improve our community and help our communities improve the quality of life for their residents," says Janet Fox, 4-H associate department head for the LSU AgCenter. "National Volunteer Week is the ideal time to honor volunteers who are meeting community needs around the country and to call the public's attention to their tremendous contributions."
Although volunteering benefits local communities and causes, volunteers benefit, too. Research shows individual volunteering builds self-esteem and helps people reconnect with society and communities. In addition, given these uncertain economic times, people find satisfaction and comfort in volunteering and serving others.
Take time to invest in your community by volunteering. Louisiana has many opportunities for both youth and adults to volunteer. Don't waste time, get out there today and make an impact. Remember, we change the world with one act of kindness at a time.
