| BOOMERANG is a 15-session youth development program geared to youth and is available in individualized curricula for grades 4-5, grade 6 and grades 7-8. It emphasizes workforce preparation "soft skills" and life skill development as well as service and experience. In this hands-on approach to learning, high school youth train to become team teachers to lead the sessions. Such cross-age teaching multiplies the benefits in civic-learning and helps youth relate positively to others. Reported findings on the success of the program indicate the following outcomes among youth: Increased feelings of belonging; improved daily practice of positive communication skills and of responsible decision making, and increased efforts to reach out through volunteerism and helping others. Program participation also strengthened leadership qualities among participants and team teachers. |
