Youth Wetlands Week 2010 Curriculum

Logo

Curriculum for Youth Wetlands Week 2010 encompasses hands-on, environmentally based lessons with a wetland focus. Program materials, including structured lesson plans, materials used to teach lessons and step-by-step procedures to activities, are provided at no cost to participating educators. These lessons are implemented throughout the academic year with the program culminating during an intensive week dedicated to wetland learning, known as Youth Wetlands Week (YWW). The program curriculum, endorsed by the Louisiana Science Teacher’s Association, and lessons are designed to follow Louisiana’s Grade Level Expectations (GLEs). New lessons are implemented for every grade level each year so students will continue to receive fun and interesting information on the current issues facing Louisiana’s wetlands.

A major objective of the YWW program is to develop lesson plans for grades 4-12 and provide schools with a teacher/student manual (including lessons and teaching materials) that can be readily used in the classroom. Each lesson plan includes 1) Focus/Overview of the lesson, 2) Learning Objectives, 3) Materials List, 4) Background Information, 5) Vocabulary Definitions, 6) Advance Preparation Tips for the Instructor, 7) Step-by-Step Procedure, 8) Blackline Masters, 9) Cited References, 10) Student Activity Sheets, 11) Lesson Outlines.

The program has been expanded to include more topics and lessons that can be adapted to various grade levels. Subject areas will include ABCs of Louisiana Wetlands, Wildlife and Fisheries, Plants and Soils, Wetland Habitats, Water, and Wetlands and YOU!  As always, every lesson developed for Youth Wetlands Week includes Louisiana Grade-Level Expectations (GLEs) ranging from science to art to physical education!

The 2010 Youth Wetlands Week will be held the week of April 19-23, 2010. This week was chosen because it falls after LEAP testing and the Easter Holiday, and it coincides with Earth Day, which is April 22, 2010. Although the YWW program is slated for one week during the year, we understand that this schedule may not be conducive to every school schedule. If you have a conflict in schedule but would like to participate, please do not let this deter your involvement. We encourage educators to utilize the YWW curriculum year-round.
