Vermilion Parish 4-H Meningitis Awareness Service-learning Project
The goals of this project were to increase public awareness of meningitis; increase member knowledge of the disease facts, signs and symptoms; encourage vaccination of age-eligible youth; and donate money to support the Meningitis Angels Association. The youth distributed educational brochures and posters to all middle and high schools in the parish. They promoted service projects at the parish leader training. They raised and donated money to the Meningitis Angels Association and the Jane Menard Scholarship fund. The youth displayed an educational booth at all parish 4-H events and at the parishwide health fair. They sold Meningitis Awareness bracelets and encouraged vaccines to all age-eligible youth in the parish. For reflection, a PowerPoint presentation was put together which highlighted all of the monthly activities connected to this service project, and the youth completed a formal evaluation. A trip to Georgia to visit the Centers for Disease Control was planned as celebration. This project accounted for 1,695 hours and reached 200 people.
