Do you want to be part of a program that is making a difference across the world?
Operation: Military Kids is teaching a special Speak Out for Military Kids Clover College course just for 4-H’ers who want to learn more about helping military kids in their own communities. Speak Out for Military Kids (SOMK) is a national program of military and non-military kids, which fosters leadership, community service, public speaking, networking and dialogue in order to make positive changes in their community, their state, their nation and their world.
The SOMK Clover College track is open to all 4-H’ers who are eligible for 4-H University, whether or not they have any connection to the military, who want to learn about the struggles facing today’s military families and who want to make a difference. The topics covered in SOMK Clover College include military traditions, the deployment cycle, stress manageme
nt techniques and coping with grief, as well as strategies to become a positive changing force in your own communities. Even though the course is focused on military families, the information and skills learned in this track are useful for working with children and families from all walks of life.
Members of SOMK will have opportunities to meet new people; make new friends; gain skills for success in school, work and life; attend retreats, events, conferences and field trips; and have fun -- all while becoming the positive changes they want to be in their communities. Anyone interested in joining SOMK should contact his or her 4-H Club leader and parish 4-H agent to register for the Operation:
Military Kids track of 4-H U Clover College and contact Kathleen Schexnayder at the 4-H State Office (225) 578-2196.
A limited number of scholarships are available for anyone, youth or adult, interested in becoming a part of the SOMK State Board. Please contact Kathleen Schexnayder for details.
Thank you in advance for your interest in Speak Out for Military Kids!
