The program opened with familiar Christmas carols led by the three presenters with Ms. Poret's guitar-playing accompaniment. The participants enjoyed the carols and Ms. St. Romain's true story of the origins of the song "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer."
Ms. Poret, in her 29th-year with Bunkie Home Health, shared important information about managing one's medicines with care and responsibility, citing research as well as personal anecdotes. After a few more Christmas carols were sung by the whole group, Ms. Coco told participants about the new healthy eating recommendations from the U.S. Department of Agriculture through the MyPlate initiative. She stressed the importance of portion control and of eating fruits and vegetables.
Ms. St. Romain gave the group a brief tour of the Louisiana 4-H Museum, pointing out artifacts and photos related to particular historic 4-H events. Many of the participants were former 4-H members and enjoyed sharing memories of their days in the program.
Light refreshments followed the tour along with a brief program evaluation, which included favorable comments such as "I learned about portion size and healthy eating habits today."
Each senior citizen received a gift bag of items from Southern University Ag Center. Items included a medicine dispenser, coupon holders, measuring spoons, MyPlate dietary guidelines for senior citizens and more.
