Kellett Hathorn
State 4-H Office
(Deceased)
Year Inducted: 2011

Kellett Hathorn’s entire 33-year extension career (1955-1988) was spent serving the 4-H program. When he served as 4-H agent in St. Tammany Parish for five years, he organized new parish 4-H Clubs, started the sheep project, enhanced the forestry project and established a livestock loan program with local banks to provide financing for livestock projects. He was promoted to the state 4-H office and assumed leadership for the adult and Junior Leader programs, 4-H camp and National 4-H Congress and Citizenship Washington Focus educational trips. He coordinated Short Course until 1982 and created the Nolan Reech Award. He also enhanced the summer camp program by expanding the recreational and educational programs, adding the swimming pool, new cabins and the archery and rifle range. He was recognized as a summer camping authority on the regional and national level. Mr. Hathorn advocated preserving several of the original camp structures built in the 1930s by the Civil Conservation Corps. He was a charter member of the Louisiana Extension 4-H Agent Association (LAE4-HA) and was awarded the distinguished service award. The LSU Alumni Association named him a winner of the Floyd Edminston Award for program development. Upon his retirement the LAE4-HA dedicated a fitness and nature trail at 4-H camp in his honor and called it the “Hathorn Trail.” In 2011, Kellett Hathorn was inducted into the National 4-H Hall of Fame.
