  • 4-H began in Louisiana in 1908 in Avoyelles Parish as a corn club for boys.

  • The first pig club in the country was started in 1910 in Caddo Parish, Louisiana by E. W. Jones.

  • The first parish to have an agent in charge of canning club activities for girls was Lincoln in 1912.

  • The first state 4-H Club Short Course was devoted entirely to instructions in home and farm projects in 1915. Certificates and blue ribbons were not awarded for competitions until 1948.

  • Camp Grant Walker was developed as a State Camp in 1935.

  • In 1954 the camp fee was $6.00.

  • A four leaf clover with each leaf bearing the letter “H” was first used as a label for products canned by members of the clubs.

  • The National 4-H Pledge and the National 4-H Motto was approved by state leaders in 1927.

  • In 1908 the state fair gave first prize to a corn club member who produced 27.5 bushels of corn from ½ acre of land.

  • The State Fair of Louisiana presented the products of the first pig club in America in 1916.

  • In 1944 4-H members raised over $3 million dollars in one week to “Buy a Liberty Ship” for the war.

  • Forestry, the leading agricultural industry in Louisiana, was established as a 4-H project in 1927.

  • In 1940 the state legislature appropriated $10,000 to finance five district and one state livestock show. The first Spring Livestock Show was held in 1948. There were 546 animals at the show.

  • The first beef calf club was organized in 1922 in Terrebonne Parish with Hereford calves.

  • 84 countries have an organized 4-H program.
