Microwave Magic
Are you ready to do hands-on activities and use the microwave oven to prepare simple snacks and complete meals? That's what "Microwave Magic" is all about. You'll have fun learning about the microwave and using it to make lots of foods from vegetables to meat, and yummy desserts. These books will also help you make healthy decisions and menus. A very important part of this project will be having a project helper. This person may be a neighbor, a family member, a friend, or anyone who has interest in working with you to complete your activities. Your helper should be involved with each activity as you complete your book.
"Microwave Magic" is a series that consists of four books. Each book corresponds to a certain age group but may be used by youths in any grade based on their project skills and expertise. The books are "Bags of Tricks," "Micro Magicians," "Amazing Rays," and "Presto Meals." Each book is broken down into four 'Bites' - each 'Bite' contains new projects as the learner progresses. It is written solely through experiential learning. This learning method distinguishes 4-H youth-development education from many formal educational methods. Youths get the most out of each experience and activity by following the five steps outlined from the experiential learning model, which are:
- youths "learn by doing" an activity (Experience)
- they share their experience and reactions (Share)
- they discuss or reflect on what they did (Process)
- youths relate skills they practiced to everyday situations (Generalize)
- they apply their experience to other real-world situations (Apply)
Some of the activities in these books are pie making, brownie baking, and chicken shaking. Through these activities, youths get the opportunity to build cooking skills as well as life skills with the help of a responsible adult.
Contact your local 4-H Office for these project books. You can also find them at 4-H Mall.org.
