St. Landry Parish Master Horseman Program

Ag Arena in Opelousas and Ahtus Melder Camp in the Forest Hill area of Kisatchie National Forest
Starting in October 2009, the LSU AgCenter will be conducting a Master Horseman Program for adults in St. Landry Parish. The Master Horseman Program is designed to improve the overall knowledge and skills of horse people so they can serve as 4-H leaders. This program consists of nine sessions taught by LSU AgCenter equine experts, the LSU Vet School and other area leaders. (There will be one training class in Kisatchie National Forest near Forest Hill.) Each three- to four-hour session will include horse care and management in a classroom setting and riding and training in an arena. Application deadline is September 14, 2009. St. Landry Parish Master Horseman Program

Ag Arena in Opelousas and Ahtus Melder Camp in the Forest Hill area of Kisatchie National Forest
Starting in October 2009, the LSU AgCenter will be conducting a Master Horseman Program for adults in St. Landry Parish. The Master Horseman Program is designed to improve the overall knowledge and skills of horse people so they can serve as 4-H leaders. This program consists of nine sessions taught by LSU AgCenter equine experts, the LSU Vet School and other area leaders. (There will be one training class in Kisatchie National Forest near Forest Hill.) Each three- to four-hour session will include horse care and management in a classroom setting and riding and training in an arena. Application deadline is September 14, 2009. The LSU AgCenter's 2009 poinsettia open house will be Dec. 4 at the Burden Center on 4560 Essen Lane in Baton Rouge from 8 a.m. to 12 noon.
Many varieties from Paul Ecke Ranch, Fischer USA and Dummen will be displayed. LSU AgCenter horticulturists Jeff Kuehny and Wanda Ellis will focus on new varieties and the care and selection of poinsettias.

The 4-H Food Fest will be held in conjunction with the 4-H Idol. Contests include egg cookery, ground beef cookery, seafood cookery, poultry cookery and sugar cookery. All 4-H’ers are eligible to participate and may enter only one dish per contest. Parish winners may be eligible to compete in district cookery contests in March or April. Be sure to read the rules and regulations, attached, very carefully! Remember to label your dishes and bring a neat well-written or typed copy of your recipe including name and school printed on the back. NOTE: All dishes (with the exception of cookies, candies and some cakes) must be brought to the contest cold (on ice and in an ice chest).
