Join the Fight Against Heart Disease!

February is American Heart Month, so let’s talk about how to keep our hearts healthy! Heart disease is the top cause of death for the United States, so it should be taken seriously! It has been shown that diet is a main factor in the prevention of heart disease. Let’s discuss some of the ways that we can work to prevent heart disease just by improving our diet.

-First, it is important to eat fruits and vegetables. They are high in vitamins and minerals that have been proven to be effective in preventing disease.

-Second it is important to make your grains whole grains. Whole grains are a good source of fiber which has been linked to regulating blood pressure. When we have a healthy level of blood pressure- we have a healthier heart!

-And one of the most important tips that we should follow to prevent heart disease is to avoid unhealthy fats.

What type of fat do we avoid??

Trans FatKeep your trans fat into under 1% of our total caloriesFoods High in Trans Fat:
-Some Frozen Pizzas
Saturated FatKeep your saturated fat intake under 7% of our total caloriesFoods High in Saturated Fat:
-Some Cheese
-Whole Milk
-Fried Foods


This recipe provides protein that has less than 1 gram of saturated fat and trans fat.

1 (15 ounce) can garbonzo beans, drained (save liquid)

1/8 teaspoon garlic powder

2 teaspoons garlic cumin

1 tablespoon vegetable oil

In a blender or food processor, combine garbanzo beans, garlic powder, cumin and olive oil. Blend on low speed, gradually adding liquid from beans, until desired consistency is achieved.

*You can serve with whole wheat pita bread or your favorite vegetables- like bell peppers!
