The LSU AgCenter's Calhoun Research Station will host an educational field day "Innovative uses for forest and forage biomass" on Thursday, Oct. 29, 2009. Registration and exhibits will open at 11 a.m. A complimentary lunch will be served from noon until 1 p.m.
The Calhoun Research Station, located 1.2 miles southwest of I-20 at exit 103, is a unit of the Louisiana Agricultural Experiment Station, the AgCenter's research branch.
The opening program at 1 p.m. will include updates of agricultural and forestry issues in Louisiana and an overview of the benefits to the Louisiana economy from the creation of new value-added forest and forage products. Calhoun Research Station researchers will present information on various topics during field tours from 1:45 p.m. until 4:30 p.m.
The tour will include demonstrations of producing composite poles from small-diameter trees, producing new chemicals and products by recycling preservatives and wood fiber of decommissioned telephone poles, partially harvesting a forest to produce wood chips for electricity production, and growing miscanthus grass for biofuel. Agribusiness company representatives will also be available to display products and equipment in a trade show atmosphere.
