Chinch Bugs (Blissus leucopterus leucopterus)

chinch bug injury
The brownish plants along the margin of this field are being attacked by chinch bugs (Blissus leucopterus leucopterus) moving out of the adjacent ryegrass which has matured.

closeup of chinch bugs feeding on rice
Both adult and nymph chinch bugs will feed on rice. At this stage the damage appears worse than it is, but ,when they feed on seedlings, they can reduce the plant population significantly.

chinch bugs in headed rice
Though there are no published economic thresholds for chinch bug control in headed rice, they can often be found there. The damage they do by sucking plant sap has not been determined, but is obvious here.
