Description:
Captured "red swamp crawfish" vary widely in color because of their diet and environmental conditions, but the most exotic colors occur because of mutations in the genes that are responsible for pigment formation.

Blue/Red/White Crawfish
Rare blue and white color variations of the Louisiana red swamp crawfish as seen alongside one of normal coloration. All specimens were female, and both the blue and white individuals were captured in commercial crawfish ponds near Crowley, La., in 2004. Photo by John Sonnier.
